Development

While comparing shelters you can also look at adaptations and differences in shelters now. For example in summer we use air-conditioner, in winter we have heaters. Explore what they used back then for cooling and heating. Also look at bathrooms. Did they have a bathroom inside or outside? Did they have a separate shelter for showering? By being able to compare shelters from back then to now they can understand how technology has advanced and changed and enhanced the shelters we have today.

1. Create a chart of similarities and differences to the cultural shelters. This may include things like; made of wood, made of mud, tall roof, windows, doors. You just need to highlight physical characteristics of each shelter.

2. Create a pin board on all the things we have in our homes now that we didn't have back then. Example toaster, heater, air-conditioner, garage, lounge room, separate bedrooms.

3. Another fun activity is to play 'If I were stranded...' In this activity you start with one student. You need a white board/chalk board and markers/chalk. One student says 'If I were stranded...' I would build a shelter that looked like this. Then they would draw the outline and then the next student will have a turn. You keep going until no one can add anything else to the shelter. Some rules to keep it fair are; you can't draw the same thing that someone else has drawn and you have to have an explanation of what you are adding and why?

Introduction

Your students are now familiar with shelters around the world. To further increase their understanding you can now go into comparing different shelters. This is where you will be looking at specifics of the shelters. Such as; how many windows? How many doors? What shape is it? Is it cool or hot to live in? How is it different from the houses we have now?
